(CNN) -- The wait is finally over.

On Saturday night, "Whovians" ("Doctor Who" fans) finally got their first full look at Peter Capaldi in his role as the Twelfth Doctor (with no karaoke or mimes in sight).

He almost literally landed with a splash, as we first saw him and companion Clara being swallowed by a dinosaur who ended up in 19th century London.

Because, obviously.

Here are five of our favorite moments of what was a spectacular season premiere.

1. The new Doctor himself

The Doctor was still in a bit of post-regenerative hysteria, which led to some hilarious lines. He also, of course, took a few shots at his new look, especially the eyebrows ("These are attack eyebrows! You can take bottle tops off with these!") and the fact that he's now Scottish.

That was probably one of the biggest surprises: For a Doctor who is darker than the ones we're used to recently (he certainly doesn't have the wackiness of Matt Smith), there was a great deal of humor in the episode.

When we saw his final costume toward the end of the episode, we've gotta say, the Twelfth Doctor is looking sharp.

2. Clara back how we remember her

When Clara first officially met the Doctor, she was in Victorian dress. Having ended up in the 19th century, she was dressed for the times once more.

Whether it was a callback or not, the producers seemed to know that the look really suits Jenna Coleman (In fact, a lot of the memorable parts of this episode seemed to do with the clothes - see Madame Vastra and Jenny's battle gear as well).

With a few episodes under her belt, Clara is the "veteran" of the show, and much of it revolved around her, especially with the Doctor being in a confused state for much of it.

She had some trouble getting used to this new Doctor, having fallen for the last one (see below), but she had instant chemistry with the Twelfth.

3. The icky new villain

A restaurant where you're on the menu?

The half-visaged android the Doctor met could give Hannibal Lecter a run for his money. Their face-off (sorry) toward the end was one of the most memorable confrontations in recent "Doctor Who" history as well.

4. A dinosaur in the Thames?!

Not much to say here, except that tyrannosaurus rex was quite a way to kick off the season.

5. The Eleventh Doctor makes a call

The biggest surprise of them all was the Eleventh Doctor's time-shifted call to Clara at the end of the episode, asking her to take care of the new him. (Though he wasn't a big fan of looking old.)

We'll miss you, Matt Smith!

What were your favorite parts of the episode?

'Biggest Loser: Second Chances' winner is...

Let’s slim down to business: Tonight, Bobby Saleem, David Brown, and Rachel Frederickson weighed it out for The Biggest Loser: Second Chances $250,000 grand prize. And the season 15 winner is….

Rachel Frederickson!

The former state swimming champion lost a whopping 58.62 percent of her starting weight, while David lost 54 percent and Bobby, 52 percent.

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 8.07.55 PM

“LOL, you are sooooo gross,” (Too?) Thin Rachel sneered at her heavier hologram. I love seeing the transformations come to life onstage, but this tends to at least somewhat veer into Mean Girls territory, right? Pipe down and eat a Kalteen bar, Rach. Hell, eat 15.

Girl is now skinny-skinny — even by Hollywood standards. The trainers looked shocked — and not in a good way.

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 8.08.36 PM

Also, I did not recognize Bob Harper, who looks like Tobias Fünke’s ultimate leather daddy come to life as played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Way to rock out, Bob!

Did the right loser win? According to math, yes. But according to you…?

15 biggest TV stories of 2013

It was the mother of all years when it came to major TV stories, which made it difficult to whittle them down for a Top 10. So we went with 15, instead!

In no apparent order (though honestly, does any story top the Duck Dynasty one?) here are the year’s 15 biggest newsmakers.

Phil Robertson on Duck Dynasty. Journalists loved the scandal; it gave us something to write about during the dog days of winter. Conservatives (and A&E) hated it because of claims that Duck Dynasty’s home network was squashing Robertson’s right to speak his mind. Ultimately, the Bible-thumping patriarch prevailed, order was restored, and the DD news cycle became the gift that kept giving long after Christmas Day.

PopStyle: Biggest fashion world faux pas of '13

The fashion world had plenty of high moments this year, but let’s face it, it’s more fun to reminisce about the lowest low moments.

Luckily, there were plenty of fashion faux pas committed in 2013.

From Elle magazine’s Melissa McCarthy cover-up to the Jay-Z and Barneys backlash, and Julianne Hough’s regrettable Halloween costume, read on to see the style headlines that got people talking… and not in a good way.

Julianne-Hough-Halloween.jpg Image Credit: FAMEFLYNET

Julianne Hough learns (the hard way) that orange is NOT the new blackface
The former Dancing with the Stars cast member sparked outrage when she dressed up as Orange Is the New Black character Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren — complete with blackface makeup — for Halloween. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize,” Hough tweeted. It’s not even a very good costume, since Crazy Eyes preferred the khaki-hued prison garb over the orange jumpsuit in season 1.

Emmys: 10 all-time biggest mistakes

In 1980, the actors strike was in effect when it came time to broadcast the awards ceremony. Although the Emmy show itself was not part of the labor dispute, a display of solidarity was called for among actors. Thus, non-actors Steve Allen and Dick Clark replaced previously announced (actor) hosts Bob Newhart, Michael Landon, and Lee Remick. Of the 52 acting nominees, the only one to attend and accept his Emmy was Powers Boothe, who won for Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones and was applauded by a partially empty auditorium. Wouldn't it have been better just to shut down the show for a year?

'Dexter' final season: 10 biggest fan gripes

Sunday you’ll see the final episode of Showtime’s Dexter. Producers are very confident they have a strong finish, a conclusion they’ve been crafting for years. The eighth season premiere, too, was quite strong. But then there were all those episodes in between. Fan reaction has been unkind. Funny or Die wrote that Dex should kill the writers. Recappers like AV Club have been brutal. One blogger last month wrote an open letter to Showtime pleading with the network to just skip to the finale. The show’s hardcore supporters on Reddit turned sour and even Dexter‘s former showrunner bashed it. What happened?

Here are the most common gripes:

1. The final season didn’t tell the story fans expected and wanted: Dexter Morgan is an unassuming police lab tech hiding in plain sight as a serial killer. Especially after last season’s finale, where Deb killed Capt. LaGuerta, fans have naturally assumed the final season would address that central tension and focus on Dex’s secret unraveling and the hunter becoming the hunted — which is the route the similarly conceived Breaking Bad took this summer. Instead, season 8 felt like a typical season with Dexter battling new external threats instead of a final season that felt like it was building toward an epic conclusion.

2. Those subplots. Masuka finds his biological daughter. Quinn tries to pass the sergeant’s exam. Jamie and Quinn’s romance is rocky. Fans wondered: Why? Why, in the final season, are we watching low-stakes side-stories? These characters should ideally be involved somehow in the central storyline, but they were shoved aside to appear in their own USA Network-style mini-dramedies.

3. Soft new characters: Dr. Evelyn Vogel was a strong addition to the show. But what is the point of Jake Elway besides barking at Deb and drinking electrolytes? Why was Deputy Marshall Clayton added to the show a few episodes before the finale to track down Hannah? Consider: This is a show full of cops and its the last season. If somebody is going to track Hannah and get stabbed to death by the Brain Surgeon. Why not give that story arc to Batista or Quinn or, heck, even Elway?

4. Miami Metro clown college. We accept that Dex is smarter than his colleagues and he gets away with a lot of homicidal shenanigans right under their noses. But season 8 took Miami Metro cluelessness to new level. First we learn that Dex successfully covered up LaGuerta’s murder last season because his bosses let him work her crime scene — even though she accused him of being a serial killer in front of the whole department shortly before she was killed. We’re told Batista has a box of evidence from LaGuerta in his living room which might incriminate Dex and Deb and we assume he’s going to look through it — he never did. Then Miami Metro lets Dex work another crime scene of somebody he’s close to — his cute neighbor’s murder, even though they dated and she lives right next door. Deb even CONFESSES to killing LaGuerta and Quinn refuses to believe her. When Dexter quips that the murder solve rate in Miami is only 20 percent, you know why — you literally can’t get arrested by Miami Metro!

5. Convoluted Big Bad. In last week’s penultimate episode, Oliver Saxon (aka The Brain Surgeon) became a rather effective icy villain. Yet for most of the season, Dexter kept trying to fake-out fans on The Brain Surgeon’s identity. By the time he was revealed as Dr. Vogel’s son, the storyline had become so tangled it was difficult to feel emotionally invested. Here’s one EW recap reader’s summary of the Brain Surgeon storyline that was posted in the comments last week:

Vogel: Dexter, I want you to kill the Brain Surgeon.
Dexter: I don’t want to.
Vogel: Please kill the Brain Surgeon.
Dexter: I will kill the Brain Surgeon.

Vogel: Kill all these serial killers.
Dexter: Okay. I found one named Zach Hamilton. He will die.
Vogel: Don’t kill Zach Hamilton.
Dexter: I NEED to kill Zach Hamilton.
Vogel: Don’t do it.
Dexter: I will not kill Zach Hamilton. I will teach him the code!
Vogel: Cool.
Dexter: He cannot be taught the code! I must kill him!
Vogel: Don’t.
Dexter: My mistake. He’s cool. I’ll teach him the code again.

Dexter: That guy you wanted me to kill wasn’t the Brain Surgeon. Instead, your SON is the Brain Surgeon! I will kill him!
Vogel: Don’t kill my son the Brain Surgeon. All he ever did was kill my other son and threaten my life.
Dexter: I NEED to kill him.
Vogel. I know, but don’t.
Dexter: Okay. (I’m really going to, though)
Vogel. What a relief.
Dexter. Look at this video of your son killing Zach Hamilton.
Vogel. The horror! Dexter, please kill my son the Brain Surgeon.
Dexter: Will do.

Brain Surgeon: You picked Dexter over me! I will kill you AND Dexter!
Dexter: Okay, now I REALLY need to kill Brain Surgeon!
Brain Surgeon: Sorry Dexter. Can we forget all this if I buy your condo?
Dexter: I don’t want to kill you, I want to bang my girlfriend.
Brain Surgeon. Okay, thanks for letting me go.
Dexter: Nope. I’m calling my sister right now to arrest you. Also, please don’t tell on me for my serial killing even though I told on you for all the brain surgery.

NEXT: Reasons 6-10: Bad romance, Argentina, plot holes and THAT scene

Biggest, buzziest movies of 2013

"The Lone Ranger" starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer is just one of the films on tap for the new year. The new year brings with it a host of eagerly awaited filmsThey range from comic book adaptations to rebootsMovies include "Iron Man 3," "Carrie" and the second installment of "The Hobbit"

(CNN) -- While the Academy gets ready to crown the best films of the past year, we've got something else for your consideration. From "The Avengers 2" to "World War Z," CNN Entertainment presents your guide to the biggest, best and buzziest movies of 2013.

Comic Book Heroes

Comic book franchises will be flying by us faster than a speeding bullet this year, from a reboot of the Superman series (replacing Brandon Routh from "Superman Returns" with Henry Cavill for "Man of Steel" June 14) to the set-in-Japan "The Wolverine" July 26 to "Thor: The Dark World" November 8.

But topping all of these on the anticipation meter (and hitting theaters first on May 3) is "Iron Man 3," which brings Tony Stark back from the epic team-up of "The Avengers." It also kicks off the next phase of Marvel movie standalones like "Thor" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" that lead into "The Avengers 2."

The stakes are more personal for Stark this time out, and although comic book fans will recognize the classic characters, Stark's got new on-screen villains to contend with such as Eric Savin/Coldblood, played by James Badge Dale. "The level of security that I got to go through to learn my own lines is out of control," Dale told CNN. "They have a Marvel security guy whose job it is to run around and find photographers hiding in the forest." Hence the minimal leaks. Still, if 2012 is any indication, it's safe to say we'll all be watching.

Funny Guys

Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Steve Carell will be back in "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" on December 20, just in time to keep San Diego classy for Christmas. Of his dim-witted character Brick Tamland, Steve Carell said that he hopes he hasn't changed at all since the first film, which came out in 2004. "I think it's such a great ensemble piece that I would hope that our roles are the same as they were the first time around," Carell said. "The storyline is going to be different, but I hope the people in it are exactly the same."

"Great" Books

"Oz: The Great and Powerful," "The Great Gatsby," "Great Expectations" -- sense a theme there yet? All of these films based on classic literature have, well, great expectations associated with them, but the anticipation around the Charles Dickens story starring Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham has dimmed a bit since its U.K. release (Its release in the United States is TBD).

Then "The Great Gatsby" had its release date shuffled from December 2012 to May 10, 2013, curtailing potential Oscar nominations this time around (although the trailers still look promising).

This leaves Sam Raimi's "Oz" film, out March 8, to take the lead. In this origin story, James Franco stars as the would-be wizard who leaves Kansas and lands in Oz where he meets a bevy of witches played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. "It's otherworldly," Weisz said. "It's not just a different country; it's like a different planet. Definitely not on Earth."

Young Adult

With no more "Harry Potter" or "Twilight," movie studios have been scrambling to create new teen-oriented franchises, and only "The Hunger Games" has caught fire so far. The second installment of the series, due November 22, just wrapped shooting in Hawaii (the new Game, featuring survivors of Games past, has a water-and-jungle theme). Fans are eager to see Katniss' wedding dress, the clock-structure of the arena and the confrontation with President Snow. (Not to mention some extra kissing this time around!)

But hot on the heels of "Catching Fire" are some worthy contenders, including boy-centric "Ender's Game" (out November 1), "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" (out August 23), and the first of the Caster Chronicles books to be adapted, "Beautiful Creatures" (out February 13).

The latter two are good-versus-evil supernatural stories: "Mortal Instruments" is about half-angel demon hunters, or Shadowhunters, and "Beautiful Creatures" is about light and dark witches, or casters, who discover what they are during a ceremony at age 16. "We've really loved everything we've seen so far in the film," said "Beautiful Creatures" co-author Kami Garcia. Audiences will likely love Emmy Rossum's take on the lollipop-wielding Ridley, who casts her siren spell with each lick.

Space Odyssey

The first nine minutes of "Star Trek Into Darkness," out May 17, are already showing in select theaters, which has amped up Trekkie speculation about plot points: Could this be a contemporary "Wrath of Khan?" Will Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious "John Harrison" character become Khan? Pointing in this direction is the casting of Alice Eve as Carol Marcus, Kirk's long-lost love and inventor of the dangerously powerful Genesis device, which could turn uninhabitable worlds into class M planets suitable for humans but could also destroy all pre-existing life.

Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity," which features "two people floating in space," as George Clooney put it, is also enticing. Clooney's co-star is Sandra Bullock, who dominates the film, and together, they are the two survivors of a damaged space station. Reports from early test screenings suggest the film, out October 18, is gorgeous and awe-inspiring, but also divisive along the lines of "The Tree of Life."

Reboots

2013 will see its fair share of familiar properties getting new life in the form of remakes and reboots. "The Lone Ranger" series (which has existed as radio and TV shows and several film incarnations) becomes a Gore Verbinski movie (out July 3) with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer aboard for a Tonto-centric story.

Tom Clancy-created CIA agent Jack Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, and now Chris Pine is getting his turn, with a release date set for December 25.

Sissy Spacek hands the "Carrie" baton over to Chloë Grace Moretz on March 15.

And Spike Lee's American remake of the South Korean thriller "Oldboy," out October 11, stars Josh Brolin as an executive who has been mysteriously confined for years and is now freed, and sets out to find out who stole his life. Will there be any eating of live octopus like in the original? They're not saying, but producer Nathan Kahane promised other "treats" for fans. "If you look carefully, you'll see some of the cast from the original," he said.

Dragons

There's no competition for "The Hobbit," the second installment of which is due out December 13 as the Dwarves get closer to their goal of reclaiming Erebor (after getting captured by both giant spiders and Elves). "The Desolation of Smaug" will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug. "He's absolutely fantastic," gushed co-star Martin Freeman. Smaug will be the first performance-captured dragon, and thanks to advancements in technology, we should be able to see more emotion and musculature in his face in the same manner in which Gollum was improved for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," only on a much bigger scale. Also look for some more elf action in the second "Hobbit" film, with the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas.

Indie Darling

Ryan Gosling fans have three ways to see their favorite actor in 2013: in "Gangster Squad," "Only God Forgives" and "The Place Beyond the Pines." The third of these, due March 29, reunites Gosling with his "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance and kicked off his romance with co-star Eva Mendes. The movie has been getting rave reviews on the festival circuit, even if Gosling's role as a motorcycle stunt rider who resorts to bank robbery sounds like a rehash of what he did in "Drive." This time, however, it's more of a family drama; Gosling really only carries one third of the film. (Meanwhile, "Only God Forgives" is a reunion with his "Drive" director Nicholas Winding Refn, but has yet to screen).

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

There won't be a bigger zombie apocalypse than "World War Z," and it's got one of the biggest stars (Brad Pitt) to anchor it. Max Brook's book featured interviews from various survivors of the Zombie War, which gave both a time line and a sensation of the global nature of the catastrophe. Pitt's character has the unenviable job of tying up disparate storylines, but if anyone can do it, it's him.

On the comedic side, it's a toss-up between Seth Rogen's directorial debut "This Is The End," out June 14, and Edgar Wright's "The World's End," out October 25.

In "This Is The End," an unspecified global cataclysm wipes out many famous actors playing themselves (including Michael Cera), so Rogen and friends hole up at James Franco's house and try to ride it out. "We joke about (the potential for a sequel), but I don't know where it would exist," Rogen laughed. "But they'll make a sequel out of anything. There's a script for "Titanic 2" lying around somewhere."

Then, in the bound-to-be-self-referencing "World's End," Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and friends try to do a pub crawl on their last night alive. Fans of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" know this will be epic.

Earth Exodus

What is it with all the films this year about Earth becoming an inhospitable planet? "Elysium" (starring Matt Damon, out March 1), "Oblivion" (starring Tom Cruise, out April 19), and "After Earth" (starring Will Smith, out June 7) share common themes, but only the first two seem to blame rampant corporatization and wealth discrepancies instead of nature. "After Earth" focuses on survival; "Oblivion" is about an underground resistance (led by Morgan Freeman).

But "Elysium," directed by Neil Blomkamp (of "District 9" fame) has the most socio-political overtones. In this scenario, the rich live on a luxurious new world called Elysium, and the poor live on Earth, which has become overpopulated, diseased and crime ridden. Damon's character fights to make a better life for himself, and inadvertently, everyone else.
