(CNN) -- Was it the end of the world at the summer box office?

There certainly was plenty of destruction to go around. Not only were several cities destroyed, including San Francisco ("Godzilla") and Chicago ("Transformers: Age of Extinction"), there was also the kind of destruction Hollywood hates: that of their receipts.

The summer box office, as of the last week in August, was down 25% over summer 2013 -- admittedly a banner year. Nonetheless, with the exceptions of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and a handful of others, there was an "eh" feeling to much of what hit the multiplex between May and August of this year. CGI carnage, gross-out comedy, comic-book saviors: Haven't we seen this movie before?

Consider this: 2014 was the first summer since 2001 in which there was no movie that topped $300 million domestically. Studios like to tout $200 million as a blockbuster benchmark, but $300 million is real high-flying territory: "The Avengers," the "Iron Man" films, "The Dark Knight," films with what they call "legs," that create return business and draw in some lukewarm moviegoers. (To be fair, "Guardians" may still get there.)

As Forbes' Scott Mendelson notes, there were various reasons for the down summer, and not all of them were bad: Some planned films were rescheduled, and others were aimed as much at overseas markets as at the United States. (The mediocre "Amazing Spider-Man 2" barely cracked $200 million in the United States but earned another $500 million in international markets.) Still, the results provide a great deal of food for thought.

Here are a few points to ponder:

1. Don't reach for the stars.

Tom Cruise ("Edge of Tomorrow"), Adam Sandler ("Blended") and Melissa McCarthy ("Tammy") couldn't carry their respective movies to blockbuster territory. Only Angelina Jolie ("Maleficent") succeeded, with Scarlett Johansson ("Lucy") getting an honorable mention. However, it might be worth it to keep an eye on Shailene Woodley, the up-and-coming light of "The Fault in Our Stars." Sure, the film was based on a beloved book, but the film's success caught many observers by surprise -- and Woodley was at the center of it all. With her previous turn in the equally successful "Divergent," she's coming on strong.

2. Blow it up good!

As mentioned, destruction was high on Hollywood's list, especially when Michael Bay is involved. The Bay-directed "Transformers" stomped on the planet again, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (produced by Bay) did some damage and "Godzilla" visited San Francisco. But more than destruction, apocalypse was in the air: witness "Edge of Tomorrow," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Purge: Anarchy." And we go to the movies to escape from real life?

3. Comedy was not pretty.

Only two movies topped $100 million domestically among comedies this summer: "Neighbors," with the sneaky, shambling Seth Rogen, and "22 Jump Street." The latter was an interesting twist on the sequel, a follow-up that knew it was a follow-up and took every opportunity to make that the source of the comedy. (In going along for the ride, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube were excellent self-parodies.) But "Tammy" tanked, "A Million Ways to Die in the West" found one more way to go and "Sex Tape" was erased. You know what they say: Dying is easy, comedy is hard.

4. Look to the East.

Who needs the USA? "Transformers" had a relatively mediocre turnout in America, grossing less than $250 million -- good enough to become the No. 2 film of the summer, but only No. 4 among the four "Transformers" films. On the other hand, overseas the film picked up $821 million -- including more than $300 million in China, becoming that country's highest-grossing film of all time. That was no accident: China is the second biggest film market in the world, and Hollywood is catering to it more and more.

5. Time is your friend.

Perhaps the most talked-about film of the summer -- at least in markets where it has played -- is "Boyhood," Richard Linklater's ode to one child's growing up. Linklater took a risk in deciding to follow his protagonist, played by Ellar Coltrane, and his other actors for 12 years, trusting that a film shot over that time would come together. It worked beautifully, with a 99% critics' approval on RottenTomatoes.com and early Oscar talk. In the past, watching someone age in a film was a sociological curiosity: witness Michael Apted's "Up" films, which have revisited a group of students every seven years. Now that we're in the YouTube age, in which every part of our lives is put on video, it'll be interesting to see if Linklater's concept becomes more normalized.

Box office report: 'Turtles' claim top spot

"Turtles" and "Guardians" maintained top spots"Expendables 3" didn't do as well"Boyhood" expanded to more theaters

(EW.com) -- Holdover tent-poles Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy maintained the top spots at the weekend box office, while the new openers trailed behind. But, while it was expected that Let's Be Cops and The Giver would open in the teens, the biggest surprise of the weekend was The Expendables 3, a franchise pic which should have easily opened in the $20 to $25 million range, but instead floundered with an estimated $16.2 million.

TMNT's success last weekend was no fluke and the pizza-loving heroes took the No. 1 spot for the second weekend in a row with an estimated $28.4 million from 3,980 locations. That's a 56.7 percent drop from its opening weekend. The movie also earned $25.6 million internationally, bringing its international total to $67.5 million. It still has yet to open in a handful of key territories including Korea (Aug. 28), Spain and the U.K. (Oct. 17), and Japan (Dec. 19).

Guardians of the Galaxy, meanwhile, rocketed past the $200 million mark and earned an estimated $24.7 million—a mere 41.3 percent drop from last weekend, which is similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier's third weekend fall.

Let's Be Cops (Cinema Score: B) edged ahead of The Expendables 3 to take third place across the weekend with an estimated $17.7 million. The Fox comedy opened earlier in the week and now boasts a domestic total of $26.1 million, which is not bad for a movie that cost a reported $17 million to produce. Audiences were 56 percent male and 54 percent under the age of 25. Demographic breakdowns report that 17 percent of audiences were Hispanic, 20 percent were African-American, and 50 percent were Caucasian. The movie also exceeded expectations in the West and Midwest.

The Expendables 3 (Cinema Score: A-) opened in fourth place with $16.2 million from 3,221 locations. Audiences were mostly male (61 percent) and over the age of 25 (66 percent) for Lionsgate's PG-13 rated action pic. It's a franchise low, and possibly too-easy to ridicule thanks to a cast that's bursting at the seams with aging action heroes, but Expendables 3 also buckled under the weight of a leak, which led to nearly 2.2 million downloads weeks before the movie had even hit theaters.

Rounding out the top five is The Weinstein Company's The Giver (Cinema Score: B+) which earned $12.76 million from 3,003 locations. The $25 million adaptation of Lois Lowry's beloved novel failed to gain much traction with critics, and the opening is a little lower than The Weinstein Company wanted (they were aiming for mid-teens). It will be interesting to see how it holds up across the next few weeks.

Here's the top five:

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — $28.4 million ($117.64 million domestic total)

2. Guardians of the Galaxy — $24.7 million ($222.28 million domestic total)

3. Let's Be Cops — $17.7 million ($26.1 million domestic total since Wednesday)

4. The Expendables 3 — $16.2 million (new)

5. The Giver — $12.76 million (new)

Also of note, Richard Linklater's Boyhood expanded to 771 locations this weekend and took in an estimated $2.15 million to take tenth place. The $4 million pic has earned $13.8 million to date. Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight also upped its theater count to 964 locations (up 794) for a $1.9 million weekend, and What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe, expanded to 787 locations (from 20) to earn $829K.

In limited release, IFC's comedy The Trip to Italy starring Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan earned $71.6K from three locations and A24's Life After Beth, starring Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan grossed $18K from two locations.

(CNN) -- Hollywood is about to fade to black on a year full of green.

According to the Los Angeles Times, 2013 is proving to be a lucrative year at the box office. Ticket sales reportedly are projected to reach $10.9 billion, which will just barely squeak by the 2012 record of $10.8 billion.

But a record is a record and despite some high-profile flops like "The Lone Ranger" starring Johnny Depp, Oscar contenders such "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" also proved to be popular with audiences, and they helped to pull receipts over last year's record-breaking amount.

Patrick Corcoran, a spokesman for the National Association of Theatre Owners, lauded the news.

"We rise and fall based on the strength of the movies in the marketplace," Corcoran said. "After setting a record, it's nice to be able to set another one, even by a little bit."

Data from Box Office Mojo.com shows that sequels and blockbusters proved to be the biggest draw. The top grossing movie, "Iron Man 3," pulled in just over $409 million, while "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has earned $391 million so far. Rounding out the top 10 were "Despicable Me 2," "Man of Steel," "Monsters University," "Gravity," "Frozen," "Fast & Furious 6," "Oz The Great and Powerful," and "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Analysts say that while the financial picture was looking less than rosy earlier in the year, the pace picked up. During the Christmas period, eagerly awaited films like "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" and "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" helped Hollywood finish off strong.

"Just having lots of movies to choose from helped drive success for our industry," said Ken Thewes, chief marketing officer and senior vice president at Regal Entertainment Group, told the Times.
